Quick Summary
Pedagogical Perspective (PedPer) (eISSN: 2822-4841) has signed the United Nations SDG Publishers Compact, a voluntary framework co-created by the United Nations and the International Publishers Association (IPA) to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As an education journal, PedPer is uniquely positioned to contribute to these goals — particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) — through its publishing practices, editorial policies, and the research it disseminates.
1) What Is the SDG Publishers Compact?
The SDG Publishers Compact is a voluntary commitment by publishers worldwide to use their publishing activities and platforms to promote awareness of and action towards the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Signatory publishers commit to 10 action points that align publishing practices with sustainability principles.
2) The 10 Action Points
As a signatory, PedPer commits to the following 10 action points of the SDG Publishers Compact:
- Commit to the SDGs and embed them in the journal’s strategy and mission.
- Publish content that promotes awareness of and engagement with the SDGs and the broader 2030 Agenda.
- Disseminate and distribute published content to the widest possible audience, including through open access.
- Develop sustainable publishing practices that minimise environmental impact.
- Work towards equity and inclusion in all aspects of publishing, including editorial teams, authorship, and readership.
- Raise awareness of the SDGs among stakeholders, including authors, reviewers, editors, and readers.
- Engage with partners and stakeholders across the publishing ecosystem to advance the SDGs.
- Monitor progress on implementing the SDG Publishers Compact and share examples of good practice.
- Advocate for the SDGs within the publishing industry and scholarly community.
- Report on actions taken in support of the SDGs on an annual basis.
3) SDGs Most Relevant to PedPer
While PedPer supports the full 2030 Agenda, the following SDGs are most directly aligned with the journal’s mission, scope, and publishing practices:
SDG 4 — Quality Education
As an education journal, SDG 4 is at the core of PedPer’s mission. The journal publishes research that directly contributes to inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities. PedPer’s scope encompasses teacher education, curriculum and instruction, learning sciences, educational technologies, assessment, inclusive education, and interdisciplinary perspectives — all of which address SDG 4 targets. See the Aim & Scope page.
SDG 5 — Gender Equality
PedPer is committed to gender equality in scholarly publishing. The journal welcomes research addressing gender issues in education and ensures equitable treatment of authors, reviewers, and editorial board members regardless of gender. See SDG 5.
SDG 10 — Reduced Inequalities
PedPer’s Diamond Open Access model (no APCs, no subscription fees) removes financial barriers to both publishing and reading, ensuring that researchers from low- and middle-income countries can participate fully in international scholarly communication. Complimentary language proofreading (Paperpal by Editage) further reduces barriers for non-native English speakers. See the Open Access Policy, APC / Fees, and Language Policy pages.
SDG 16 — Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
PedPer upholds transparency, accountability, and ethical standards in all aspects of publishing. The journal’s publicly documented policies, COPE-aligned ethics framework, and commitment to editorial independence contribute to trust in scholarly institutions. See the Publication Ethics & Malpractice page and SDG 16.
4) How PedPer Implements the Compact
PedPer translates its SDG Publishers Compact commitment into practice through the following concrete actions:
Open access to research: All content is freely available under CC BY 4.0 with no embargo, ensuring maximum reach and impact for SDG-relevant research.
No financial barriers: Zero APCs, submission fees, or reader fees, enabling equitable participation from researchers and institutions worldwide.
Language inclusivity: Free language proofreading for accepted manuscripts ensures that non-native English speakers can contribute to the global scholarly conversation.
Ethical publishing: COPE-aligned policies, transparent peer review, and publicly documented editorial standards demonstrate responsible institutional practice.
Diverse editorial governance: International editorial board membership and encouragement of submissions from diverse national, linguistic, and institutional contexts.
Content relevance: PedPer’s scope (education, pedagogy, learning sciences, educational technologies, inclusive education) directly addresses SDG 4 and intersects with multiple other SDGs.
Digital-only publishing: As an online-only journal, PedPer minimises the environmental impact associated with print production and distribution.
5) Broader Signatory Commitments
PedPer’s endorsement of the SDG Publishers Compact is part of a broader commitment to responsible, ethical, and transparent scholarly publishing:
Ethical Research Involving Children (ERIC) — protecting the rights and welfare of children in research
San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) — fair and responsible research evaluation
